City Council and Local Option Election Set for May 4 - This week the city council ordered the elections that will be held on May 4, 2019. The following will be on the ballot for voters to consider:
- A general election to elect a Mayor and City Council Places 3 and 5.
- A special election to fill a vacancy for City Council Place 1.
- A local option election for the purpose of legalizing the sale of all alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption only.
Individual cities in Texas have local control over what types of alcoholic beverages can be legally sold in their communities. Citizens in a community can hold a local option election and decide to legalize or prohibit the sale of different types of alcoholic beverages (beer, ale/wine, or distilled spirits) for on- or off-premise consumption. On January 2, 2019, a petition was filed with the City Secretary and certified, in accordance with Section 501.031 of the Texas Election Code. State law requires that, upon receipt of a valid petition, the City Council order a local option election to be held on the next uniform election date.
